Summer Makeup and Beauty Tips
Whether you’re enjoying a staycation and hoping for more heatwaves in the UK, or heading to more tropical climates for guaranteed sun, these Summer makeup and beauty tips will ensure you look and feel fabulous on holiday.
Fake It ’til You Make It
If you’re like me and dread getting your pasty pins out in Summer, apply some fake tan before you go away. You’ll rock your bikini with way more confidence on your first day, and will be able to relax and tan at a safer and steadier pace.
My favourite at the moment is the St. Moriz Professional Mousse, as it’s easy to apply and a lovely rich colour, but there are loads of great brands like St. Tropez, Bondi Sands and Vita Liberata available at Boots, Superdrug & online. You could also treat yourself to a spray tan for a longer lasting bronzed look.
If you’re DIY’ing it, be sure to use a good oil-free body scrub or exfoliating gloves and apply a light layer of body lotion to elbows, hands, heels and knees (or all over if you have dry skin) before you apply your tan. Make sure you’ve done any waxing and hair removal the day before you tan, and always use a mitt for even application.
Personally, I prefer my tan to come from a bottle – it’s worth the effort for me to keep myself safe and keep my skin healthy. However, if you do like to tan please protect yourself and do it gradually – use a high SPF of at least 15-30, re-apply regularly, wear a sun hat and cover up and spend time in the shade.
Bonus – you’ll not only be protecting your health but also your skin’s bounce and elasticity long term, as sun damage is the number one cause of skin ageing and wrinkles!
Holiday style should always be low maintenance – we want to be out the door in 5 minutes to enjoy the sunshine. Skip the blow dry and straighteners, and embrace your hair’s natural texture. Apply a generous amount of serum, oil or leave in conditioner to protect your hair from the sun, distribute with a detangling brush, scrunch with an old t-shirt and leave to air-dry for a heatless beachy wave.
For extra texture and volume, use a salt spray on dry hair and use the same scrunching method with your hands to work the product in.
When I’m off to the beach, I prefer to be bare faced. If there’s any time you can embrace the natural look, it’s on holiday! However, for the ladies who want a little holiday glam, here’s an easy and simple look you can do in a couple of minutes. Feel free to add in or take away anything you like to make the look work for you.
Start with a tinted moisturiser or BB cream. This will boost your skin tone and enhance the colour you get when you’re out in the sun. Dot around your face and massage in with your hands. Dab a small amount of cream bronzer and highlight on the cheeks and temples to give the skin a bronzed glow, apply waterproof mascara and finish with a fine dusting of powder down the t-zone and a generous amount of powder bronzer everywhere the sun hits – along the forehead, down the nose, across the cheeks and across the décolletage area. Apply some lip balm with SPF and you’re good to go!
If you want to amp it up for night time, smudge a cream eyeshadow across the lid and along the lower lash line and blend with your finger. Or, play up the lips with a fun sheer colour – reds, corals and pinks scream Summer, and they look even more gorgeous with a tan.
I hope everyone has a fabulous Summer holiday, wherever they’re heading. If you have any special occasions and events planned, from weddings to parties and big nights out, be sure to get booked in and have your makeup done!
